I think your overall sentiment is true but I question how much this has to do with bots and trolls, I think it's more likely that social media algorithms are designed, either accidentally or on purpose, to make us outraged about things, and then to compound that by showing us more and more similar content.
People often say "go outside, the internet isn't real life". And that's good advice, but I think it's a bit misleading. The internet is real life in that the people on the internet, also exist in the real world. The issue isn't so much that people on the internet are uniquely crazy, more so that the uniquely crazy people online get pushed to your feed more.
