  2. Wouldn't it be great to bring all of our experience together to really explore where and how a particular meme is spreading? For instance, we could trace the beneficiaries, the roots, and the results in different communities throughout the world.

  3. The internet is central to modern journalism, but many across the world face barriers of low internet access, literacy, and censorship. There have, though, been innovative attempts to deal with this. For example, in Burundi when radios were closed after the controversial 2015 elections, many turned to sharing files (downloaded radio broadcasts, podcasts, articles...) via social media and also sharing/ copying files via quick connections between phones (Bluetooth, Whatsapp, etc.). This requires far lower general internet access and is more difficult to track/ censor.

What other methods/ formats have successfully dealt with low internet access or censorship? How could journalists…

  4. While digital tools and the internet have made it increasingly easier for communities to document stories and traditional knowledge collected to pass down from generation to generation, what special opportunities and challenges does an open internet bring? For example, Wikipedia, the world's largest free encyclopedia makes all of its content available under a Creative Commons license that also allows for commercial use. Is that appropriate for indigenous traditional knowledge from communities that have suffered countless examples of misappropriation of knowledge? But also the internet and digital archives can also ensure that this information is available for future generations.

  5. Recently in Pakistan, journalists have been disappearing and also been trialed in the name of national security. Similar situations can be seen all over the world. It would be amazing if digital security is discussed with ways to safeguard ourselves online.

  8. For those of us who grew up in the West, state sponsored harassment has (mostly) not kept us awake at night. Now we find ourselves in a moment where we can no longer take free speech for granted. What can we learn from people in other parts of the world who have been dealing with this longer than we have? What trends are we seeing?

  10. The term "fake news" seemed to become an urgent concern in the English-speaking West thanks to the US election cycle, but despite the recent frenzy, fake news is not a new thing. Many parts of the world have been dealing with it. A non-US-centric examination of the phenomenon, perhaps from the perspectives of Russia/Ukraine, Mexico, India/Pakistan, Myanmar, Philippines?

  13. Since so many geopolitical heavyweights now have stakes in Syria, the media war surrounding the conflict has taken several dimensions, often ignoring those who just wish for the 'world to listen' to the problems afflicting them. How can Global Voices' commitment to citizen journalism contribute to understanding the Syrian story? And what sort of lessons can we draw from this and apply to other cases?

  15. The region has three of the top ten most widely spoken languages in the world (Hindi, Bangla, Punjabi), as well as other languages spoken by approximately 1% of the world's population (Urdu, Tamil, Marathi) = 70,000,000 people. But what about some of the region's underrepresented languages? What are the projects, initiatives, people that have committed to ensure that free, open, and educational content is available in these languages?

  17. In a open society, where people enjoy the freedom of speech can express themselves, make their voices heard or channel out their anger in the right way. However, in a society where its citizens are forced to be silent, how can see access to the social media, or how the social media outside that society can help its citizens to have a voice to change to situation.

  18. based on some chats i've had with folks, i wonder if some kind of roundtable on election reporting would be interesting. in one sense, there's fewer topics more likely to be 'biased', since elections deals directly with politics and political positions. but on the other hand, it's an obligation of democratic states to support impartial reporting for elections, and citizens need access to impartial information to make decisions about their future. for many countries this has been an ongoing struggle, and recent elections worldwide have highlighted the internet's/social media's potential for false/faulty info to impact results. maybe this is of…

  19. A panel exploring GV experiences and beyond in writing about the situation in Venezuela. There are more than two sides to the conflict(s) there, and all of them think that they have a monopoly on the truth and that everyone else is wrong (and perhaps dangerous).

As it tends to happen in internal conflicts, there are links with history and complext elements that complicate things... Also, as an author, you have your own opinions.

How do you check your own biases when attempting to present the facts of the matter? And how to write a story in which you need…

  20. In an era of technological progress and expansion of internet use, social media has been an instrument to spread information, a safe space to vent the outrage resulting from repression and individual frustration. Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms play a key role in inspiring young activists to express their views and shed lights on stories. How can this reality trigger mass mobilization on economic, political, social and cultural levels? Why does it have huge influence on shaping public opinion?
